A live stream from the Munich Opera Festival
(TBA)

"Over a million viewers from 55 different countries and countless imitators from the Vienna State Opera to various private suppliers prove that we're right with STAATSOPER.TV. We see our live streams as an expansion of our cultural mission, and we continue to stand out from all the other services offered by the nature of our programme: Unique, live, free of charge, plus the top singers and dancers and the most important directors", says General Manager Nikolaus Bachler. "Also Kirill Petrenko supports the initiative and was happy to make all the new productions conducted by him available in this form too."

As previously, four to six cameras in the auditorium will broadcast the performances throughout the world at www.staatsoper.de/tv. Up to 40 microphones in the orchestra pit and on stage provide first-class sound quality. From this season onward, the video images will be produced in high definition (Full HD). Another innovation is the provision of streams in HD resolution with increased bandwidth, offering even better picture quality. All the streams (without subtitles, German or English subtitles) are offered in three different transmission qualities (Low, High, HD). Viewers can choose freely between these three qualities and adapt the transmission to their own individual internet connection.

General Manager Nikolaus Bachler (or Ballet Director Ivan Liška for the ballet performances) will provide an introduction to the work before every live stream, and in the intervals, the Bayerische Staatsoper will offer a glimpse into the theatre's backstage areas. Subtitles in German and English complete the services offered. Apart from a computer, laptop or tablet, users only need a broadband internet connection such as DSL and speakers connected to the device.

With The Linde Group, which has been involved with the Bayerische Staatsoper for years, it had already proved possible last year to attract an international company as a sponsor for STAATSOPER.TV. Linde has been a Season Partner to the Bayerische Staatsoper since 2008.

Technical requirements of our online streams

Advance test

If you would like to find out before the live transmission whether your system meets the technical requirements, start one of the videos in the Media Centre. The format and technology of these films are the same as the live transmission. If the video plays, then the technical requirements for the live transmission are in place.

Adobe Flash Player

Our live stream runs via the Adobe Flash PlayerExterner Link. When a video starts, it automatically checks the installed version and compares it with the most recent version available. If a new version is available, the update and installation of the latest Flash Player are automatically recommended. We recommend that you carry this out. The Adobe Flash Player is constantly being developed. New versions also offer security benefits. At the moment, streaming requires a Version 9 player or higher.

Basics

The essential requirement is a broadband internet connection such as DSL. The video is offered in three transmission qualities (Low, High and High Definition (Full-HD)) which automatically adjust to the individual internet user's data connection.

During the transmission, no downloads should be carried out in the background and no additional applications should be open. With access via WLAN, the internet speed depends partly on the distance from the access point / WLAN router. A change in physical position can improve the connection quality.

With DSL/cable connections, the bandwidth promised by the provider may fluctuate.

Notebook to television

1. Via HDMI

Newer laptops often have a DisplayPort or HDMI outlet. With a DisplayPort, you will need a suitable DisplayPort to HDMI adapter and an HDMI cable of sufficient length. First connect the cable to the television using a free HDMI input. Then switch the television input to the selected HDMI input. Then connect the laptop to the HDMI cable. The laptop then usually increases the display to TV width automatically. If the display does not appear or the video window appears on the laptop screen, the laptop display must be switched off. To do this, press the FN (function) key and the monitor key (F7) at the same time. Then select "Output to external monitor" or "Second screen only" from the selection menu.
Sound is also transmitted from the laptop to the television via the HDMI output. If you wish to listen using the headphone output of the laptop, the output must be changed over in the laptop using the control panel → Sound (Windows) to HDMI.

2. Via VGA or DVI connection

The connection can also be made via a VGA or DVI connection. For this, you will only need a VGA or DVI connector cable. Connect the cable to the VGA or DVI output of the laptop and to the VGA or DVI input of the television. Set the television in the "Input" menu to PC (RGB/VGA).

On the laptop, press the FN (function) key and the monitor key (F2) at the same time so that the monitor screen is shown on the laptop.

Notebook to stereo system

For this, please use a mini jack cinch cable. The laptop is connected with the mini jack via the headphone output. At the stereo system, connect the two cinch plugs to AUX or TV. Make sure that the sound output on the laptop is on. The symbol in the task bar in Windows must not be crossed through. You should also check the volume level in the sound mixer and adjust it if necessary.

If the sound output does not work, check the sound output settings in the control panel → Sound. Select headphone output.
