Igor Stravinsky: Mavra

The young Parasha's mother is pleased, as she seems to be the perfect replacement for the cook that has just died. Mavra is happy with little wages and asks for little else. But why does she behave so strangely? Is she stealing from the distrustful mother, as she suspects, or do she and Parasha share a completely different secret at the end?
Stravinsky's Opera is based on the verse poem The Little House in Kolomna by Alexander Pushkin and is a comedic love story built on travesty. The piece from Stravinsky's neo-classical period (the première was in Paris in 1922) nevertheless refers to Russian Romanticism, and even appears at times to let a little ragtime ring out.

Peter I. Tchaikovsky: Iolanta

Princess Iolanta's sadness is based on her intuition: By order of her father King René she is kept from knowing she has been blind from birth. Sequestered for the most part in a remote castle in Provence, she also knows nothing of her noble lineage – but senses that something is being kept from her. With the appearance of the Moorish doctor Ibn-Hakia and two knights with differing intentions, events that will change Iolanta's life on every level begin to happen.
Tchaikovsky's last opera premiered in Moscow in 1892 together with his ballet, The Nutcracker; the piece was first performed at the Bayerische Staatsoper in 1847, and has not been performed there since. Time for a comeback!

OPERA STUDIO

The Opera Studio supports highly talented young artists and prepares them for an international career in step with actual practice. This promotion of young artists continues to play an important role in the success of the Bayerische Staatsoper. The Opera Studio program runs one to two seasons and consists of role studies, vocal lessons, acting and movement classes as well as language training. The young artists are cast for small roles in productions on the main stage and take part in several concert projects, which they create together with the opera studio pianists. They also work together with professional singers and conductors and have the opportunity to attend main stage rehearsals and performances. Workshops with staff members from different departments of the Staatsoper on subjects like career development complete the training program.

The Opera Studio at the Alte Pinakothek

Mit „Utrecht, Caravaggio und Europa“ (16. April – 21.

ORCHESTRA ACADEMY

The Orchestra Academy of the Bayerisches Staatsorchester was founded in 2002. It was established for the purpose of passing along the centuries-old tradition of one of Germany’s oldest orchestras and thus keep alive the special sound as well as the performance culture of this unique ensemble. The goal of the Academy is the acquisition of practical orchestral experience under professional conditions with its special requirements concerning opera as well as the symphonic area. This way, our academy students have the opportunity to become acquainted with the working methods and the extraordinarily extensive repertoire of one of the world’s leading opera orchestras.
