KIDS & CO

In line with the Bayerische Staatsoper’s 2021-22 season motto, every child is also a “king or queen”. Just like on the big stage, our productions and projects for children and young people strive to put the audience’s emotions at their centre and enable young people to identify with our fictional characters.

Our KIDS & CO programme creates productions, workshops and other projects for children of all age groups and their families. Here, you’ll find the complete schedule, our online offers and materials to print out at home.

DAS KIND DER SEEHUNDFRAU
Das Kind der Seehundfrau (for children aged 8 and older) is based on an ancient myth from the far north. The music is written by Jesse Broekman (new composition, 2022). Songs, recitatives, dance, and movement flow together and conjure up an icy world. Our theatre worlds are fictional, but our feelings are very real – every child is a king or queen.

PRODUCTIONS FOR CHILDREN 2022-23

HOW THE FISH FOUND THE SEA

The production for children aged four and up is based on a picture book with a story by Alan Watts, a British philosopher and writer. His story is about a fish who does not feel at home in his surroundings and has no idea where the sea is. Only after a long search does he realize that the sea has always been around him and that he just has to make friends with the possibilities offered by the great water kingdom. The fish discovers the joy of playing and dancing.

SPRING DOCH

The children's opera "Spring doch" (from 6 years) deals with being alone and overcoming the inner fears of children. It focuses on the moment when, as an elementary school child, one is thrown back on oneself. How courage arises in such a situation to dare something - courage that initially surprises and perhaps overwhelms oneself and how one dares to assert oneself. Gordon Kampe's music opens up new listening experiences and perceptions of space and sound; the children encounter new, contemporary music and experience how sounds and situations connect.

FAMILY PERFORMANCES AND INTRODUCTIONS FOR CHILDREN

Opera is an experience for the whole family. We therefore offer family tickets for selected opera and ballet performances.  All family performances are preceded by introductions especially for children and young people. The work and the production are introduced and the visitors are prepared for the performance. Participants in the productions are often guests and talk about their personal experiences. The introductions take place 45 minutes before the performance begins. The age information provides an orientation as to the age at which the performances are recommended and is binding.

WORKSHOPS FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES

With our SpielOpera and SpielBallet workshops, we offer children a playful way to discover the world of opera and ballet. Art becomes tangible, the children get to know the characters and plot, and experiment with music and movement. Almost in passing, the children become experts of the respective production and can show off their knowledge when visiting the family performance with their parents afterwards. SpielOpera workshops are joined by singers, SpielBallet workshops include a ballet coaching in one of our rehearsal rooms.

We also offer SpielOpera and SpielBallet workshops for families, offering children and their parents the opportunity to explore a production together.

Prior experience is not required.

Duration: 90 minutes

MAESTRO MARGARINI: WEBSITE FOR CHILDREN

Our website for children (www.maestro-margarini.de) invites young and old opera lovers to explore the virtual opera house with our Maestro Margarini. It offers useful information and fun quizzes as well as games for children as young as 5.

Whether it’s getting dressed up in our costume storage or playing the lighting game, where you help a young ballerina on her way to fame, this is the ideal setting for young opera lovers to discover all areas of an opera house. As stage managers in our newest game, they get to manage a performance of L’elisir d’amore by themselves. APP2MUSIC_DE

Many children and young people have a musical talent. However, without the right cultural offers and a school or parents who provide access to musical education, these talents often remain hidden. Smartphones, tablets and apps, however, have become part of young people’s everyday lives. app2music_DE offers workshops with professional musicians, using productions of the Bayerische Staatsoper and the Bayerisches Staatsballett. With the technology they use every day, the students playfully discover their talents and use them. They explore their creativity and join a community of other music fans, discovering new possibilities: they form iPad bands, produce beats and sound collages, improvise, cover their favourite songs, compose their own music and perform it live. In workshops and jam sessions, the young musicians learn to use different apps and play real instruments and immediately employ their newly found abilities. This project is made possible through our cooperation with the Kreisjugendring München-Stadt and app2music e. V.

You can find more info about the workshops and registration process here.

app2music_DE is financed by the ministry for education and research in the context of „Kultur macht stark“ (Culture makes us strong).
