LOVED AND HATED – anniversary year at the Bayerische Staatsoper
200 years of Nationaltheater, 100 years of Bayerische Staatsoper
The Bayerische Staatsoper commenced its anniversary year in 2018 with a grand New Year's Eve party. We have two anniversaries to celebrate: The Nationaltheater, which houses the grand stage, that is the heart for both opera and ballet performances, was built 200 years ago.
In addition to that, we celebrate the moment, that took place 100 years ago, when in 1918 the Bayerische Staatsoper was handed over from the Bavarian monarch into the custodial care of the young Bavarian republic.
The Bayerische Staatsoper has since been a point of regular discussion, of rejection and approval, but hopefully never of indifference. It is both loved and hated – alternating, concurrent, and mostly for an entire life long.
Hailing the title, LOVED AND HATED, spread over the anniversary year in 2018 there will be various special events, projects and installations, as presented herein.
15 Juni 2018: Festival studio opening party
Mirko Borsche's office has been shaping the opera's image for ten years now. And this too has been praised and debated just as much as the opera itself. Together and shortly before the Munich Opera Festival commences we will be taking over the Reithalle for the big pre-opening of the Festival Studio. There will be music from the stage and the decks, with video and light installations, performances, drinks and lots and lots of fog.

Participants are guided through the building, finding out all about the ballet and orchestra room, rehearsal stages and many other areas to boot, which you would otherwise never see. 5 February 2018: The Impossible Encyclopedia No. 40: Scar
The Impossible Encyclopaedia (Unmögliche Enzyklopädie) also celebrates an anniversary, so the perfect opportunity for an anniversary edition. Under the very brilliance of its surface, the building's history does indeed bear numerous scars, which also see the light of day from time to time – sometimes more, sometimes less. Reason enough to illustrate them in astonishing ways. With The Impossible Encyclopaedia, the department of dramaturgy of the Bayerische Staatsoper invites visitors to take a look at some terms and terminology that impose themselves when perusing the content of the pieces performed during a season. A journey of discovery, together with our opera's performers and musicians, and with experts of the most diverse professions and passions.
