Together with director Christiane Lutz and conductor Geoffrey Paterson the young artists of the opera studio will bring their own new production on stage: Gian Carlo Menotti's The Consul. Premiere is on 28th March.
John Sorel fights the state underground to defend his ideal of freedom. To do this, he is prepared to give up his wife Magda, their child and his mother. Magda wants to follow John into exile and applies to the consulate for a visa for herself and her family. But the process is blocked by bureaucratic obstacles; Magda is never admitted by the consul.
While John's supposed fight for freedom condemns his family to ruin, Magda refuses to face up to reality and acknowledge the dark lies of her life. The result is an accident where Magda and John's son dies, finally leading to disaster for the entire family. An opera about the desperate wait for a visa - Gian Carlo Menotti's 1950 work Consul could not be more topical. The fate of Magda Sorel and her family shows how individuals fall apart as a result of destructive political activism and an inhuman bureaucracy. Menotti's urgent appeal for more compassion and humanity is the opera for our times.
For the first time Christiane Lutz is leading a new production at Bayerische Staatsoper. Her former productions include Alcina at Oper Graz, Ulisse at the Wiesbadener Bachwochen, Rinaldo and Hänsel und Gretel at Theater an der Wien/Kammeroper and Der Kaiser von Atlantis at Semperoper Dresden. British conductor Geoffrey Paterson will held the musical direction of The Consul.

The Opera Studio program runs one to two seasons and consists of role studies, vocal lessons, acting and movement classes as well as language training. The young artists are cast for small roles in productions on the main stage and take part in several concert projects. They also work together with professional singers and conductors and have the opportunity to attend main stage rehearsals and performances. Workshops with staff members from different departments of the Staatsoper on subjects like career development complete the training program.
The past seasons, Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Rossini's La Cenerentola, Haydn's La fedeltà premiata, Leoš Janáček's The Cunning Little Vixen, Hans Werner Henze's Elegy for Young Lovers, Mirandolina by Bohuslav Martinů, Gioachino Rossini's Le Comte Ory and Benjamin Britten’s Albert Herring were premiered at the Cuvilliés Theatre.
