Our 1st Festival Premiere „The Stigmatized“
Physically disfigured, Alviano Salvago appears condemned to a life without love and erotic fulfilment. He devotes all his energy to creating a perfect – if artificial – world, in accordance with his vision – the island of Elysium.
For a long time, the opera Die Gezeichneten (or The Stigmatized), like its composer Franz Schreker, fell to the wayside after being repressed by the Nazis. Even today, very few people know about this Austrian artist's work, despite having been mentioned in the same breath as Richard Wagner and performed more often than Richard Strauss in the 1920s. Die Gezeichneten wonderfully encapsulates an entire decade: it is a glittering fin de siècle drama, showing an age fascinated by Jugendstil, expressionism and psychoanalysis, and reflecting its turn-of-the-century spirit.
Krzysztof Warlikowski, who garnered attention with his production of Die Frau ohne Schatten, will be taking on another story that oscillates somewhere between a fairytale and a disturbing psychological drama. Ingo Metzmacher is in charge of the musical direction of the opera, conducting for the first time at the Bayerische Staatsoper. Metzmacher was the General Music Director of the Hamburgischen Staatsoper from 1997 to 2005. He regularly conducts at the Salzburg Opera Festival and will be leading the Ring of the Nibelungen at the Grand Théâtre in Geneva. The main roles will be sung by John Daszak (Alviano), Christopher Maltman (Tamare) and Cathrine Naglestad (Carlotta).
