Anja Harteros back at Bayerischen Staatsoper
Soprano Anja Harteros returns to the Bayerische Staatsoper shortly before the Munich Opera Festival 2018 commences. She'll embody the title role in the series of performances of Richard Strauss's Arabella. During the festival she'll also perform a lieder recital with Wolfram Rieger.
Arabella is looking for a man. Or more to the point a man is being sought for her. Because Count Waldner's erstwhile wonderfully rich noble family is now in financial difficulties. While Arabella still dreams of "Mr. Right", her parents already forging marriage plans. Meanwhile little sister Zdenka is also searching for her true love, albeit as Zdenko, because money is too scarce for a second daughter of marriageable age. Practically Shakespearean confusions and entanglements come to the stage here. And all's well at the end, or is it?
The centrepiece of Andreas Dresen's production (2015) is an over-dimensional stairs with no railings. A symbol of the rise and fall of the family. The characters are also moved to the foreground again and again here with the dynamic of the revolving stage produced by Mathias Fischer-Dieskau, to then simply disappear again. The protagonists' web of relationships consequently weaves further all the time, and above all that of Arabella and her family. At Anja Harteros's side Doris Soffel sings as mother Adelaide, Kurt Rydl as Count Waldner and Hanna-Elisabeth Müller as sister Zdenka. Michael Volle plays the role of the yearned-for husband Mandryka.
