Two operas and one concert with Kirill Petrenko
In the new year, General Music Director Kirill Petrenko conducts two opera series and an Academy Concert until March. He starts with Ludwig van Beethoven's only opera Fidelio on four dates in January and early February. As in the premiere in 2010, Anja Kampe, Jonas Kaufmann and Wolfgang Koch are singing in Calixto Bieito's production.
In the 4th Academy Concert (17/18/20 February) Kirill Petrenko conducts a major vocal work with the Chorus of the Bayerische Staatsoper. The programme features Ludwig van Beethoven’s Missa solemnis, one of the composer’s most important works, which challenges all gender boundaries. The conductor consequently realises one of his special ambitions. Marlis Petersen, Okka von der Damerau, Benjamin Bruns and Tareq Nazmi embody the solo parts.
Kirill Petrenko will then conduct a series of Wagner’s “festival play for the consecration of the stage”, Parsifal, with Nina Stemme (Kundry), Burkhard Fritz (Parsifal), René Pape (Gurnemanz) and Michael Nagy (Amfortas). The staging by Pierre Audi was created in 2018 in close collaboration with the artist Georg Baselitz, who designed the stage design. Find out in our web series Making of Parsifal, how the set design was brought to life by our employees in the workshops.
