„Lulu“ conducted by Kirill Petrenko on DVD!
The Bayerische Staatsoper 2015 production of Alban Berg's Lulu, conducted by Kirill Petrenko, is now available on DVD and Blu-Ray. It is the first ever DVD-/Blu-Ray production showcasing the work of our General Music Director. “Never has the music from Lulu sounded so clearly or so brightly”, said Eleonore Büning in the Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung The production is by Dmitri Tcherniakov, who also produced Dialogues de Carmélites and Simon Boccanegra at the Bayerische Staatsoper among others.
It's the story of one of the most deadly women in the history of opera: Lulu is femme fragile and femme fatal at once, she is the femme totale, in other words, the “primal form of womanhood”. But in all the various guises in which we encounter her, she is always the product of the the male gaze first and foremost: it is he who creates the image of the woman he desires – and it's as a result of this restrictive viewpoint that the object of his desire meets her end. Alban Berg uses subtle symmetry to show Lulu's path, with a score that encompasses all the forms and richness of musical history.
The leading role in the 2015 new production is sung by Marlis Peterson, who was praised as “Singer of the Year” by the Opernwelt magazine for her interpretation of Lulu. Also performing is Daniela Sindram as Gräfin Geschwitz and Bo Skovhus as Dr. Schön/Jack the Ripper.
The DVD and Blu-Ray of the production is now available in our online shop!
