Two Premieres at the Start of the 2020–21 Season

The 202021 season of the Bayerische Staatsoper begins three weeks earlier than usual on 1 September 2020 with the world premiere of Marina Abramovićs opera project 7 Deaths of Maria Callas. The opera studio production Mignon also celebrates its premiere. Frank Castorf's production of Die Vögel remains unchanged, followed by the new production of Falstaff, which was originally planned for the 2020 Munich Opera Festival. The premiere of Luca Francesconi's Timon of Athens is postponed indefinitely. Discover all the new dates here  including lots of Mozart and song recitals with Jonas Kaufmann and Christian Gerhaher! FAQ Ticket Sales 20–21 Season

The basic rule is: Your health has the highest priority! We will consistently implement the developed and coordinated hygiene concepts and adapt them on a daily basis. But it is also a matter of the heart for us that you experience a fulfilling and stimulating performance visit with us - we are looking forward to seeing you again!

In the following overview we answer some of the central questions about the start of the season. If you have any further questions, please contact the visitor communication department.

How many visitors are allowed?

The remaining performances in October will take place in front of 50 visitors. Here you can find the current October seating plan.

Due to the current governmental decisions we unfortunately have to stop our regular schedule for the rest of the month as of November 2nd. All special performances in the Cuvilliés-Theater and Guided Tours are also subject to the prohibition. 

How do I get my money back?

All sold tickets will be cancelled and automatically charged back.

1. I have already deposited my bank details at Central Ticket Office.
All tickets for cancelled performances will be automatically cancelled and returned. Please check your bank statements for refunds.

2 I have not yet given my bank details to the Central Ticket Office. 
All tickets for cancelled performances will be cancelled automatically. The ticket price will be converted into a voucher which is stored under your customer number. You will receive an e-mail from us (if you only have a postal address: letter) and can then make your choice:

  • Redeem voucher until 31.12.2023
  • Transfer back to your bank account
  • Donation to the house

When will autumn tickets go on sale?

You can now order tickets via the schedule (ticket contingent 1):

  • Orders for December are being processed.
  • Orders for January will be processed from 14 November.

A further contingent of tickets (ticket contingent 2) will be available for direct sale online, by telephone and at the box office on the following dates:

  • All productions in December: The date for December will be postponed due to the closure.
  • All productions in Januay: 5 December 10.00 am.

Depending on demand and availability, ticket purchases can be limited to a maximum of two tickets per order. If the quantity of tickets requested exceeds the supply, the decision will be made by lot.

  •     Orders for September will be processed from 7 August,
  •     Orders for October and November will be processed from 26 August,
  •     Orders for December will be processed as usual on the same date from September 1.

A further contingent of tickets (ticket contingent 2) will go on sale online, by telephone and at the box office on the following dates:

  •     All performances in September: from Tue 18 August 10.00 a.m. (no box office sales up to and including 30 August),
  •     Performances from 1 October to 13 November inclusive: from Sa 12 September 10.00 a.m,
  •     Performances from 14 November: as usual, two months in advance from 14 September.

Depending on demand and availability, ticket purchases may be limited to a maximum of two tickets per order. If the quantity of tickets requested exceeds the supply, the decision will be made by drawing lots.

Wheelchair places: One of the two seats is reserved for written advance booking. One seat is reserved for sales at the counter and by telephone. Sales begin one week before the regular counter sales start. In September, barrier-free access to the building will be provided via the Freunde-Foyer (entrance Alfons-Goppel-Straße). Which seats are on sale?

We have defined a modified seating plan that complies with the current regulations on the spacing of cultural events and, in accordance with the specifications of the Bavarian State Government. Should there be any further modifications or aggravations in the course of time, we will adjust the seating plan accordingly and sell the tickets directly (ticket contingent 2).  Basically the categories and price schemes of the regular seating plans remain valid. For ballet performances, the arrangement of the categories in the stall has been changed, as the lines of sight have changed due to the raised orchestra pit. Please indicate on the order form whether you also accept single seats. Please be aware that we had to temporarily extend our orchestra pit. Therefore your view on the stage might be limited and the distribution of price categories in the stalls are subject to change.

What else should I bear in mind when visiting?

Detailed information about your visit will be sent to you by e-mail in good time before the performance. They will tell you what to take into account on admission, whether there will be a break and gastronomic offers and whether you will have to wear a mouth-and-nose cover during the performance - depending on the valid regulations. 

Every ticket purchase is personalized, an anonymous purchase at the box office is unfortunately not possible in the current situation. It is not necessary to register the specific visitors, but as a buyer you are obliged to be able to name the visitors of the performance. Please forward the information about the visit to the actual visitors and take note of our current supplementary conditions.

Please also note that due to the current situation there may be cast changes and changes in the schedule of the productions shown - thanks for your flexibility!

What happens with the subscription?

Your seats are of course still reserved for you. Subscription passes will only be sent out and invoiced as soon as play can be resumed in the planned form. Since no significant change in the situation is expected by the end of the year, we have to suspend all subscription calls until the end of the year. As a compensation, we have extended the permanent subscription discount of 20% for all performances up to and including 31 December. Also, when processing orders (ticket contingent 1), the first 20 tickets per performance are always allocated to subscribers. At the beginning of December, a decision will be made as to whether subscription series will be cancelled for the entire season or whether a restart in spring can be expected.  Thank you very much for your loyalty and patience!

Unfortunately, gift subscriptions have to be cancelled this season. All orders for gift subscriptions are automatically cancelled.

I already ordered tickets for the new season some time ago, is this order still valid?

All orders that are not affected by a change of schedule remain valid. If there are any changes or questions from our side, we will contact you. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact our Visitor Communication Department.

I have a voucher that expires at the end of 2020. How long can I still use it?

Vouchers valid until 31.12.2020 are automatically extended until 31.12.2021. You don't need to do anything else and can redeem the voucher as usual for a purchase online at the counter or by telephone until the end of 2021.

What can I do if I cannot attend a performance after all?

If you have bought tickets for a performance but are unable to attend, please use our Ticket Exchange Platform. Please make sure to exchange contact details with the buyer when selling your tickets via the Ticket Exchange so that we can name the visitors to the performance in case we need to.
