Christian Gerhaher makes his Munich debut as Wozzeck
He is a good man, this Wozzeck! And yet he is badgered and harassed. Misused by the Doctor. Bullied by the Captain. Deceived by Marie, his love. Wozzeck, the victim of mental cruelty, an existence tortured by sadistic fellow humans. There can be no escaping it. Finally, Wozzeck kills what he loves, and then drowns. Alban Berg saw Georg Büchner’s play Woyzeck (still incomplete on his death), almost 80 years after it was written, on the eve of the First World War. Moved by the disaster for which the “Wozzeck” murder case gives a mere example, with his score he created a piece of funeral music for a world spiraling into disintegration.
