If you would like to test whether you meet the technical requirements before the live broadcast, start one of the videos in the media library. If a video plays, the technical requirements for live transmission should be met.
- The prerequisite is a broadband internet connection, starting with DSL and higher. For reception via mobile radio, at least the LTE standard should be 3G or higher.
- The video is offered in different transmission qualities: From low (240p) for low bandwidths to high definition (1080p, full HD).
- During transmission, no downloads should be carried out in the background and no additional applications should be open.
- When accessing via W-LAN, the Internet speed depends, among other things, on the distance to the access point / W-LAN router. Here, changing the spatial position can improve the connection quality.
Keep your operating system and programmes as up-to-date as possible. For example, make sure that you use a browser that is as up-to-date as possible. For example, Microsoft's Internet Explorer is no longer being developed further. In this case, it is recommended that you install the Microsoft Edge browser as its successor.
The currently popular browser types such as GoogleChrome, EdgeChromium (successor to IE), Firefox or Safari support smooth video playback.
- The transmission takes place as Adaptive HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) in an HTML5 player. This means that the video quality largely adapts to the available bandwidth. The transmission initially starts in the lowest quality for the lowest bandwidth. If the internet connection allows a higher data rate, the video adapts in a short time with the best possible quality. The HTML5 Player allows the video to be played in almost all browser versions, operating systems and end devices.
- Browser versions for PC and Mac
The HTML5 Player is optimised for the common browser types Chrome, Firefox or Safari. In addition to the automatic adjustment of the video quality according to the measured bandwidth, you have the option of setting the desired bandwidth yourself in the lower bar of the player controls. This is recommended in cases where the bandwidth is subject to constant fluctuations, which can lead to constant jumps in quality. In this case, a lower bandwidth should be selected, which can then be delivered constantly. - Stream for iOS (iPad/iPhone)
Mobile devices with iOS such as iPad or iPhone, as well as all common Android devices, are also designed for playing HLS streams.
They behave differently with regard to the playback functions and sometimes use their own player. Here, the quality is adjusted automatically. On devices of newer generations, the quality can also be selected manually on the player during reception.
- Please note: Some devices start the live stream in mute mode, which means that the user has to switch on the sound on the player himself.
- Adobe Flash Player
As the Flash Player technology has been officially discontinued by Adobe at the end of 2020, it will no longer be possible to access the livestream via this application. Some outdated browsers (e.g. earlier versions of Internet Explorer) can only play livestreams via our player using Adobe Flash Player as a plug-in. For security reasons, we strongly recommend updating or reinstalling to a current browser version. Flash is no longer required and should be uninstalled if in doubt.
- You don't see a transmission?
Clear the cache of your browser. If you are using a Windows computer, press the keys Ctrl + F5. If you have a Mac PC, press the keys cmd (apple) + Shift + R.
If necessary, check the Internet connection and the available bandwidth. - The transmission is jerky, the stream does not run smoothly?
Depending on the load of the computer processor or the bandwidth of the Internet connection, there may be quality losses and dropouts. Close all other programmes and windows that you do not need at the moment to take the load off the computer and the connection. Make sure that no other videos are being played in parallel (possibly in the background) or that no data transfers are being carried out.
Reload the page. Access the live stream via an alternative browser (Firefox, Google Chrome, Edge-Chromium on Windows) and check whether the problem persists. - The transmission started without sound?
Please check on the device, browser and player whether the mute function is active.
Start the check with the video player and look for the loudspeaker symbol in the control bar and the setting of the loudspeaker control. Some browsers influence the video player so that videos are started in muted mode in the default setting.
In addition, some browsers offer the option of muting in the header bar. Look for the speaker symbol in the browser bar above the web page to see if the sound is muted. Finally, check the speaker functions on the computer itself.
- Connecting a notebook to the television via HDMI
Newer laptops often have a DisplayPort or an HDMI output. If you have a DisplayPort, you will need a suitable DisplayPort to HDMI adapter and an HDMI cable of sufficient length. First connect the cable to the television via a free HDMI input. Then switch the TV's input to the selected HDMI input. Then connect the laptop to the HDMI cable. The laptop will then usually automatically expand the display on the TV. If the display does not appear or the video window is visible on the laptop screen, the laptop display must be switched off. To do this, press the FN key (function) and the monitor key (F7) on the laptop simultaneously. Then select "Output to external monitor" or "Second screen only" in the selection menu.
The sound from the laptop is also transmitted to the television via the HDMI output. If the sound is to be transmitted via the headphone output of the laptop, the output in the laptop must be switched to HDMI in the Control Panel → Sound (Windows). - Connecting a notebook to the television via a VGA or DVI connection
The connection can also be made via a VGA or DVI connection. All you need then is a VGA or DVI connection cable. Connect the cable to the VGA or DVI output of the laptop and to the VGA or DVI input of the television. TV is set to PC (RGB/VGA) in the "Input" menu.
On the laptop, the FN key (Function) and the monitor key (F2) must be pressed simultaneously so that the monitor image is displayed on the laptop. - Notebook stereo system connection
Please use a mini-jack RCA cable for this purpose. The laptop is connected via the headphone output with mini jack. On the stereo system side, connect the two cinch plugs to AUX or TV. Make sure that the sound output on the laptop is on. The symbol in the task bar in Windows must not be crossed out. Also check the volume level set in the sound mixer and correct if necessary.
If there is no sound output, check the sound output settings in Control Panel → Sound. Select Headphone Out. - Smart TV
Smart TVs are new flat-screen TV sets with Internet functionality and a built-in browser. You can also follow the live stream via these devices. To do this, enter the URL www.staatsoper.de/tv via the remote control or a connected keyboard. - Internet Set-Top Boxes / Media Hubs
e.g. Sony Google TV, Apple TV, Samsung HomeSync etc.
Staatsoper.TV can also be watched via Internet set-top boxes. To do this, connect the unit to your TV set via HDMI in accordance with the operating instructions. Check the existing connection with your Internet line. You can also watch the live stream with these devices via the browser. To do this, enter the URL www.staatsoper.de/tv via the enclosed remote control or a connected keyboard.
