New productions: „Parsifal“ and „Il trittico“
In 2018 Kirill Petrenko opens the Munich Opera Festival for the first time, giving his début performance with the premiere of Parsifal. After Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Tannhäuser and Der Ring des Nibelungen, the General Music Director therefore once again performs another work by Richard Wagner. The "stage‐consecrating festival‐play", as Wagner liked to call it, will be staged by Pierre Audi, who has already produced Tamerlano (2008) at the Bayerische Staatsoper. Audi is supported by visual artist Georg Baselitz, who is responsible for the stage design. Jonas Kaufmann celebrates his seventh Munich première already in the title role. Singing at his side will be Christian Gerhaher (Amfortas, role début), René Pape (Gurnemanz), Wolfgang Koch (Klingsor) and Nina Stemme (Kundry).
During the Festival this season's new production of Giacomo Puccini's Il trittico will return under the lead of Kirill Petrneko. The production by Lotte de Beer combines the three one-acts to one tryptich about humans in the face of death and grief. Wolfgang Koch, Eva-Maria Westbroek and Yonghoon Lee build the ménage à trois in Il tabarro. Ermonela Jaho sings the title role of Suor Angelica, Michaela Schuster the role of the aunt. In Gianni Schicchi Ambrogio Maestri takes over the title role, further parts are sung by Pavol Breslik and Rosa Feola.
Richard Wagner's „Der Ring des Nibelungen“
After two cycles in spring Petrenko will lead one additional performance of the whole Ring des Nibelungen during the festival. In the production by Andreas Kriegenburg sing among others Wolgang Koch (Wotan), Jonas Kaufmann (Siegmund), Ain Anger (Fafner/Hunding), Anja Kampe (Sieglinde), Nina Stemme (Brünnhilde), Stefan Vinke (Siegfried) and John Lundgren (Alberich).
