The Festival premieres 2018
This year the Munich Opera Festival programme includes two premières and two world premières: First to be enjoyed is the world première of Zeig mir Deine Wunder (Show me your miracles) from the HAUEN-UND-STECHEN theatre collective as part of our Festival Workshop. Richard Wagner's Parsifal follows on 28 June with Jonas Kaufmann in the title role and conducted by General Music Director Kirill Petrenko. The second world première is also part of the Festival Workshop: Nikolaus Brass's The Passers-By. Towards the end of the festival summer the Bayerische Staatsoper brings Joseph Haydn's Orlando Paladino to the stage of the Prinzregententheater. Film maker Axel Ranisch will produce the comic hero drama. You'll also find the full Festival Workshop programme here.
„Parsifal“ with a stage design by Georg Baselitz
In 2018 Kirill Petrenko opens the Munich Opera Festival for the first time, giving his début performance with the premiere of Parsifal. Pierre Audi returns to the Bayerische Staatsoper for this new production of Richard Wagner's last music drama. In 2008 he had produced Haydns Tamerlano (2008). Audi is supported by visual artist Georg Baselitz, who is responsible for the stage design. Neither balsam, nor medicinal herbs can provide relief to the wounded and ailing Amfortas, ruler of the Grail kingdom. His path to recovery proves to be a complex one. No member of the Grail community can reclaim the spear which inflicted the wound, but only an outsider, a “pure fool”, enlightened by compassion. Only by the tip of this spear touching Amfortas’s wound can he be healed. On his journey of self-discovery, towards his destiny as chosen deliverer, Parsifal is accompanied, not only by the skilful Grail Knight Gurnemanz, but also by the enigmatic and seductive Kundry, who opens his eyes to sensuality and extrasensory experience.
Jonas Kaufmann celebrates his seventh Munich première already in the title role. Singing at his side will be Christian Gerhaher (Amfortas, role début), René Pape (Gurnemanz), Wolfgang Koch (Klingsor) and Nina Stemme (Kundry).
In the context of Opera for all one performance of Parsifal will be broadcast live on the Max-Joseph-Platz on 8 July 2018. The on-site live stream is free of charge, no ticket needed.
Alex Ranisch stages „Orlando Paladino“
Film maker Alex Ranisch will stage the second festival premiere and presents from 23 July a rarely performed piece by Joseph Haydn: Orlando Paladino. At the Munich Opera Festivals he has already staged a double performance consisting of William Walton's The Bear and Francis Poulenc's La voix humaine (2013), as well as the children's opera, Pinocchio (2015). The Bayerisches Staatsorchester will be conducted by Ivor Bolton, who most recently performed the première of Carl Maria von Weber's Oberon, König der Elfen (2017 Festival). Mathias Vidal sings the title role, with Adela Zaharia embodying Angelica at his side.
