Biographies
Tomio Mohri is famous for his costume designs and installations of exhibitions, but he also works as stage designer, director and author. He is also greatly interested in the problem of relationship between movement and space and he tries to solve it with multi-media-means.
For many years he was artistic director for the exhibitions of Issay Miyake. He developed a new style of visual performance for them which is still considered exemplary. Among his creations were Issay Miyake A un at the Musée des Arts Decoratifs in Paris as well as exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
He was responsible as author and director for different theatrical productions in Tokio, mask dances that moved between dance and No-theatre. In 1980 he started his career as stage designer for Maurice Béjarts Casta Diva. In 1984 he designed the costumes for the opera Le Coq d’Or for the Chatelet Theatre in Paris. Other outstanding costume designs were those for Swan Lake at the Paris Opéra in 1992 and for Die Frau ohne Schatten at the Bavarian State Opera. This production was premiered in Tokio in 1992 and presented for the first time at the Munich National Theatre in 1993 where it is still in the repertoire. For the Berlin Schaubühne he did the costumes for the production of Madame de Sado in 1996. In the same year he designed the costumes for Tristan and Isolde at the Prinzregententheater in Munich.
Konstanze Vernon commissioned him to do stage and costume designs for La Bayadère in 1998.
