ance visionary George Balanchine, who founded the New York City Ballet in the mid-20th century and led it until his death in 1983, was inspired with Jewels, produced in 1967, by the jewellery display of a Fifth Avenue jeweller. He therefore named each of the three parts of the ballet after a jewel. The work is also an homage to the three countries and ballet traditions that heavily influenced his life at the time: Emeralds (France), Rubies (the US) and Diamonds (Russia). With Jewels the Bayerisches Staatsballett presents a full-length ballet by George Balanchine for the first time.

Conductor

Robert Reimer works as a conductor in different fields: from opera to ballet, from baroque to modernity, from classical concerts to cross over events. His conductings are available on CD and DVD internationally. Beyond that he is present on TV on a regular basis.

Robert Reimer was born in Luxembourg and was already employed at the Hessisches Staatstheater Darmstadt during his studies in Cologne and Düsseldorf (1991-1995). There he gained first experiences as a capellmeister while assisting GMD Prof. H. Drewanz. Afterwards he continued as an assistant of major conducters such as C. Eschenbach, S. Cambreling, M. Boder, M. Schönwandt, R. Frühbeck de Burgos, B. de Billy, J. Belohlavek, D. Callegari and M. Albrecht during the Salzburg Festival as well as at the opera houses of Paris, Brussels, Barcelona, Leipzig, Copenhagen, Geneva, Santiago de Chile and Antwerp. Invitations to Cologne, Essen, Wuppertal, Leipzig, Copenhagen, Oslo, Düsseldorf and Duisburg followed. In Duisburg, he debuted with Don Giovanni in 2005 and continued conducting multiple operas as first capellmeister. Ever since Robert Reimer works with outstanding singers in the opera field such as A. Denoke, D. Kuebler, R. Gorr, P. Petibon, R. Trekel, J. Johnson, M. Salminen and A. Dohmen.

During the past view years Robert Reimer successfully debuted at major opera houses, for example:

Berliner Staatsoper, Deutsche Oper Berlin (followed by conducting own premieres every year since 2011), Grand Théatre de Genêve, Royal Opera Copenhagen, Finnish National Opera, Copenhagen Opera Festival, Stuttgarter Staatsoper or Grand Teatro del Liceu Barcelona. Thereby he is conducting operas like Manon, Der Freischütz, Eugen Onegin, Die Zauberflöte or Katja Kabánova.

Robert Reimer’s repertoire also includes ballet classics such as The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Peer Gynt or La Bayadère. His conductings of Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker at the Deutsche Oper Berlin with the Berliner Staatsballett were broadcasted live on TV and are available as DVD from BelAir-Classiques. In 2013 Hänssler Classic published a CD of Robert Reimer conducting music of D. Milhaud, H. Sauguet and D. Scarlett with the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern, better known as the SWR series Les Ballets Russes (Vol. 9).

In cross over projects Robert Reimer works with stars like Chris de Burgh, Ute Lemper, Till Brönner, Joja Wendt and Klaus Hoffmann.

With the beginning of the 2018/19 season, Robert Reimer gives his debut with the Bayerisches Staatsballett conducting George Balanchine’s Jewels.
