There’s lots of action in Michael Tippett’s almost one and a half hour opera The Knot Garden: The garden of a typical English middle class married couple becomes a labyrinth of passion, of psychological perplexities and the quest for freedom. Who loves whom, why and why like this? Parents, children, therapists, freedom fighters, musicians and poets are thrown into a game, which seems like a mixture of Mozart’s Così fan tutte and Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Rarely played in Germany, English composer Michael Tippett – committed pacifist, who lived through both World Wars – wrote a turbulent piece at the end of the sixties, which in the age of an increasingly crazier exceptional present still believed in the game in being able to understand and change the world and to throw off old shackles. The work of young director Charlotte Sprenger and her stage and costume designer Aleksandra Pavlović already featured at the Radikal Jung festival. For the Festival Workshop they will stage a musical, never performed in Munich before.
