The 2016/17 season at the Bayerische Staatsoper

General Manager Nikolaus Bachler and General Music Director Kirill Petrenko have eight opera premieres in store for the 2016/17 season. The season's theme is Was folgt [What follows]: "This expression suggests just as much ending as new beginning. The question as to the consequences of our own actions in an ever more complex world leaves us all too often confused and provides the subject matter for our premieres – two of which are under the direction of Kirill Petrenko," reveals Nikolaus Bachler.

The General Music Director is collaborating with Harry Kupfer on a new production of Dmitri Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. In May 2017, Kirill Petrenko will tackle Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser for the first time. The production is by Romeo Castellucci. The first premiere of the season will be Gaetano Donizetti's La Favorite with Elīna Garanča in the title role. Conductor Michele Mariotti will make his house debut with Semiramide. Celebrating its first performance on stage at the Bayerische Staatsoper will be Umberto Giordano's Andrea Chénier with Anja Harteros and Jonas Kaufmann. The Munich Opera Festival will open with Franz Schreker's Die Gezeichneten under the musical direction of Ingo Metzmacher. The Festival will also feature the house debut of young director and puppeteer Nikolaus Habjan, who will bring Carl Maria von Weber's Oberon to the Munich stage. The eighth new production of the season will be the Opera Studio's premiere of Gian Carlo Menotti's The Consul in March.

The new director of the Bayerisches Staatsballett, Igor Zelensky, has revealed his plans for the Munich company: Yuri Grigorovich's Spartacus continues the Munich penchant for presenting productions which have broken new ground throughout the history of ballet. Christopher Wheeldon's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland will open the 2017 Ballet Festival, during which the Staatsballett will also play host to the Stanislavsky Theatre Ballet, with their performance of Mayerling. A contemporary mixed bill evening, repertoire performances of Giselle, La Fille mal gardée, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Symphony in C / In the Night / Adam is and La Bayadère complete the programme.
