SCHOOLS & CO – the Bayerische Staatsoper's programme for teachers
Bringing musical theatre to schools, nurseries, universities and other educational facilities is an essential part of our DNA. The cooperation with schools and kindergartens benefits a broad social group. Getting to know artistic practices offers children the opportunity to actively participate in culture and benefit from creative stimuli in everyday school life. The possibility to create, sing, dance, play and make music together as well as the shared experience of working towards a common goal is a great way to strengthen these communities and their individuals. Art is education.
The SCHOOLS & CO programme offers:

DER MONDBÄR
In Der Mondbär (for children aged 3 and older) the little bear wants to claim the moon for himself. But the moon shines for everyone. The music ranges from the familiar opera repertoire to the works of contemporary composer Richard Whilds. The story is catered towards our smallest audience members, making the world of opera accessible to them.

MAX UND DIE SUPERHELD:INNEN
Max und die Superheld:innen (for children aged 6 and over) is based on Carl Maria von Weber’s Der Freischütz and deals with courage, friendship and the fear of failure. Max goes on a journey through a mysterious forest, where the adventures and superheroes of opera history await him. In the end Max is faced with two questions: Am I confident in myself? Is there a hero in me?

DAS KIND DER SEEHUNDFRAU
Das Kind der Seehundfrau (for children aged 8 and over) is based on an ancient myth from the far north. The music is written by Jesse Broekman (new composition, 2022). Songs, recitatives, dance and movement flow together and conjure up an icy world. Our theatre worlds are fictional, but our feelings are very real – every child is a king or queen.
DATES AND FURTHER INFO ON THE PIECE AND CAST
There is a limited number of student tickets for several opera performances. These can be booked together with an introductory event, a workshop or a discussion after the performance.

For all new productions, we offer one class “maximum” insight into the process of a new opera staging or dance creation. In two preparatory workshops, the students get to know the piece, the music and the staging. A follow-up discussion complements the project after the visit to the general rehearsal.
This project is aimed specifically at secondary schools in Munich and the surrounding area. In several workshops at the school, but also at the National Theatre, the pupils get the chance to creatively explore the topic of the opera. Taking a selected work as an example, the pupils learn about various areas and professions involved in an opera production. They have the chance to look behind the scenes of a global opera house and to examine the respective opera’s plot and music. They will write and perform small scenes and become musicians themselves. The project spans approximately three months, and can help to promote team spirit and maybe reveal one or two hidden talents. The project ends with a visit of the opera.
Currently, we offer 'Maximum Opera' for the following productions:
All relevant info is announced at the beginning of each school year.
Please send applications to [email protected]
This project is aimed at primary, secondary or special school classes. Educators of the Bayerisches Staatsballett work regularly with the same class. The pupils learn what it means to move as a group, to own the space, the music and the rhythm. They learn about the origins and history of ballet and the various departments and professions at the National Theatre. They will visit a ballet production to see the Bayerisches Staatsballett in action. The individual projects last approximately three months.
The following projects are planned:

DACAPO is the music education project of the “Musical Academy of the Bayerisches Staatsorchesters e. V”. It was developed by the orchestra’s musicians for children at primary and secondary schools in Munich and the surrounding areas (for students in Year 3 and above). Four musicians of each instrument group visit two classes in the morning. In workshops they present their instruments and their profession and then play a curated concert for all interested pupils, parents and teachers.
DACAPO combines meeting performers and getting to know them with the opportunity to try out orchestral instruments in the workshop as well as the chance to experience a real concert situation
You can apply for the DACAPO project through the Bayerische Staatsoper’s school programme at [email protected].
This project is generously supported by the friends and sponsors of the Musical Academy of the Bayerisches Staatsorchesters e. V.
During a guided tour through the National Theatre, the students learn interesting facts about the history and architecture of the building and hear anecdotes about personalities who have shaped the 350-year history of the National Theatre. They gain an insight into the internal processes and the commitment that is made every day before the curtain rises in the evening. The tour goes through the King's Hall, the Ionian Halls as well as the auditorium and, depending on availability, also into the stage area.
The group rate for pupils is 50 euro for a group of max. 15 persons. For larger groups, you can request a parallel tour under the same conditions.
The appointments last approximately 60 minutes and are arranged individually with our Visitor Communications:
