The second new production of the season: Puccini's „Il trittico“
Our second new production of the season and the General Music Director’s first Puccini premiere is Il trittico. Lotte de Beer is staging the three one-act parts: Il tabarro, Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi. This triptych comprises of three historical highpoints, from the early Middle Ages to the 20th century. They unite the death motifs – the deaths of relatives, and of an illegitimate and long-lost child, as legacy hunting or genocide. “It’s no coincidence that this piece was written while the First World War was raging in Europe”, says de Beer, who’s producing an opera for the Bayerische Staatsoper for the first time.
Kirill Petrenko conducts Il trittico
It is the first time that Il trittico will be heard in Munich in its original language; the first Munich premiere in 1959 was sung in German. Kirill Petrenko conducts this opera for the first time: “Giacomo Puccini reached the zenith of his virtuosity with Il trittico. He brought together all the styles of Italian opera in this work – from its earliest history to the present day – Musica sacra as well as Verismo and Commedia dell’arte. The stylistic confidence in which Puccini unifies old church music, grotesque comedy and echoes of Claude Debussy fascinates me greatly. The three parts do in fact fit together. As different as they are from each other, they portray the same arc of life. It's a great but rewarding challenge for a director. And that's why I'm really looking forward to our new production of this masterpiece.”
Wolfgang Koch, Eva-Maria Westbroek and Yonghoon Lee make up the love-triangle in Il tabarro. Ermonela Jaho and Ambrogio Maestri take on the other main roles, Sister Angelica and Gianni Schicchi.
