Rolf Borzik

Rolf Borzik is born in Poznan in 1944, he dies in Essen in 1980. He studies graphic art and design at the Folkwang University in Essen, where he meets the dancer and choreographer Pina Bausch. From 1973 until his untimely death, he designs the sets and costumes for Tanztheater Wuppertal, decisively shaping its image. Borzik invents unusual spaces and costumes that are both poetic and close to everyday life. He repeatedly plays with elements of nature (water, earth, etc.); his costumes seem to be taken from everyday life and are elegant and opulent at the same time. Through his work, he opens up a completely new perspective on dance spaces and dance clothing, a style-defining influence reaching out far beyond his death.
