NEW HERE?
One doesn’t go to the opera every day. Which is why you might be asking yourself the odd question or two before your visit: What should I wear? What happens if I’m late? And what exactly is an overture? Our “New here” section provides answers.
The previous protective measures and access controls are no longer required. For your visit of an event in our house you do not need to show any proofs. We are looking forward to your visit.
Our guests may take photos for private use with a mobile phone or small digital camera in the front-of-house area (for example in the foyer, Ionic Rooms or in the Königssaal). Video and audio recordings are not permitted in the auditorium during the performance for copyright reasons, and violations will be prosecuted.
What about applause photos?
The applause is essentially still part of the performance. The performers in question may also invoke rights against you in this respect. Backstage areas such as stage, costume and make-up are also protected by ancillary copyright.
All information regarding ticket sales can be found here: www.staatsoper.de/kartenkauf
Find answers on en/ticketinfoWith our applause, we afford all performers and those involved their well-deserved praise for the performance. Feel free to be generous with your applause if you liked the show – they appreciate it!

To ensure you enjoy your performance visit properly, you should allow for time to visit the cloakroom and the toilets. Performances begin promptly. Out of respect to our performers and other visitors, we don’t admit late-comers until the first intermission. Admission begins one hour before the performance.
No opera visit without evening dress or tie? Nonsense! We want you to feel good. For many visitors this means dressing up for this special evening. However, there is no official dress code – we look forward to exceptional outfits as much as we appreciate jeans and comfortable jumpsuits..
See and be seen! A note to all Instagram users: Feel free to tag outfit selfies on our Instagram feed. We’re excited to see your pictures!
The Italian word libretto means “little book”. So the libretto is simply the text that goes with the opera.
An overture is an orchestral introduction to an opera, a play or an oratorio. Similar to the trailer for a movie, the main characters and storylines are presented in the overture, but purely with music. The overture is usually played before the curtain rises.
Matinees are performed either in the morning or the afternoon as standalone events and are an excellent preparation for the respective performance visit. Those involved with the production provide insights into the formation process, the staging and other background elements of the production. Ideal, therefore, to dive deeper into the material.

In cooperation with the Institute for Theatre Studies at LMU Munich all performances, dating back to the early 20th century, are now being digitally recorded based on the Staatsoper’s cast lists. The new database can also be found on the Bayerische Staatsoper’s website from the 2021-22 season. For starters, you will find detailed season information on Bayerische Staatsoper premiere and repertoire performances since 1967 (when Günther Rennert took office as General Manager). In time, the archive will continue to grow until it comprises earlier performances, too.
The current cast lists will also be accessible when this new platform is up and running. In the meantime, feel free to write to us if there’s a specific cast list you’re interested in, and we’ll send it to you as a PDF file. Simply write to [email protected].

No, you simply have to show your ticket on your mobile phone. Our ushers just have to be able to scan the QR code, which is on the ticket.
The evening box office is usually open until ten minutes before the performance begins. After this, you will find tickets that were not picked up with our ushers. Late admittance is only possible if the production allows it, otherwise you will have to wait until the first intermission.
If last-minute tickets are available, you can purchase these at the evening box office. Guests under 30 can look forward to tickets at the evening box office for 10 euro. Just make sure to bring identification with you.
All standard Bayerische Staatsoper tickets that have the MVV’s logo and the info “Mit MVV” on them, can be used for travelling to and from the performance on all MVV transport options. They are valid from 3 p.m. on the performance day (or three hours before the performance begins) and until 6 a.m. on the following day. (The MVV transport system cannot be used with monthly tickets and tickets that have been bought with the Offstage 360 card.)
When using a TicketDirekt ticket, you require a photo ID with the name that’s on the ticket. If the ticket is passed on to someone else, it is no longer valid for the MVV, however, the performance can be visited as usual.
Tickets cannot be returned. However, if you cannot attend the performance, feel free to sell your ticket via our ticket exchange. You could make another fan very happy!
With our online ticket exchange, guests can sell tickets they no longer require for the original price.
Lost and found items are kept in the Bayerische Staatsoper’s admin office. Here you can access the contact form.
Eine Weitergabe von Tickets ist grundsätzlich möglich.
