Thomas Mayr

Head Ballet Master

Thomas Mayr was born in Munich. He started his professional dance education in 1978 at the Munich Ballet Academy with a scholarship from the Heinz-Bosl-Foundation. In 1984 he was engaged as a member of the Corps de ballet at the Bavarian State Opera.

During the season 1989/90 he was released from work to take part in a course on classical dance education at the Hungarian State Institute where he received his diploma as ballet master. In 1990/1991 he rejoined the ballet company in Munich as a dancer and trainer, since 1993 he has been ballet master. In addition, he organised the Young Choreographers Workshop for the State Ballet as well as the company's tour to the Philippines. Invitations as a guest trainer led him to the Cullberg Balett in Stockholm, to the Dresden Ballet, the English National Ballet, to the Ballet Philippines in Manila as well as to the Den Norske Opera in Norway. He was artistic adviser for productions of the Ballet Philippines and restaged works of John Neumeier (A Midsummer Night's Dream, Dresden), Hans van Manen (Concertante, Ballet du Rhin) and Lucinda Childs (Chamber Symphony, Firenze and Ballet du Rhin).
In the 2010/2011 season he graduated in theatre and music-management at the Ludwig-Maximlians-Universität München. In January 2015, former Artistic Director Ivan Liška promoted him to head ballet master.
