Nitin Sawhney
Born in 1964, the composer, performer, producer and DJ began his solo career in 1993 when he released his debut album Spirit Dance. Since then, he has released more than a dozen albums under his own name and contributed music to over 60 film productions as well as numerous television productions, streaming service productions and video games. In 2001 Sawhney composed the piece Neural Circuits for the Britten Sinfonia, in 2004 Sawhney received a commission from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra as part of the Harmony Project. In 2006 Sawhney composed new music for Franz Osten‘s silent film Schicksalswürfel. This was followed in 2010 by new music for the silent film Dreams of Every Night by Japanese director Mikio Naruse, and finally in 2012 for Alfred Hitchcock‘s silent film The Lodger. All three compositions were premiered by the London Symphony Orchestra.
In 2002, Sawhney created the music for Akram Khan's dance piece Kaash, and since then he has also created the music for the productions Zero Degrees (2005), Bahok (2008), Vertical Road (2010) and iTMOi (2013), the latter in co-creation with Jocelyn Pook and Ben Frost. Sawhney has received numerous awards, including the Ivor Novello Award from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors in the ‘Lifetime Achivement’ category. He has also held the rank of Commander in the Order of the British Empire since 2019.
