FREIHEIMISCH
In the emerging Freiham neighbourhood in Munich’s west, the participatory musical theatre project “Freiheimisch” is set to grow further in the coming years. Together with performers from Bayerische Staatsoper, Bayerisches Staatsballett and Bayerisches Staatsorchester as well as other cooperation partners, residents create a wide range of cultural contributions here, from musical and dance theatre through to interdisciplinary art events. The focus is on the concept of understanding art as a connecting element between urban development and community. Freiheimisch asks: What can opera be today, in the middle of a new neighbourhood that will be home to over 25,000 people? How can musical theatre reflect and help shape social processes? Freiham represents future-oriented, sustainable, and innovative urban development, which includes residents’ participation and cultural involvement from the very beginning. And this is precisely where Freiheimisch comes in: The project provides a cultural meeting place where artistic expression, shared experiences and social development mesh with one another. Since 2021, a network has been established in cooperation with local partners from the culture, education, social work and urban planning areas, to accompany, document, and creatively shape the neighbourhood’s development.
