FESTIVAL FOCUS: ARTWORK OF THE FUTURE?

This year's Munich Opera Festival focuses on works by Richard Wagner and Giuseppe Verdi - two artists who, each in their own way, became revolutionaries in the musical theater. With the festival focus "Artwork of the Future?" we want to use their masterpieces as a starting point to cast light on the eternal search for new forms of opera. Lectures, artistic interventions, guided tours and discussions will both sharpen the view on the form-breaking potential of the old masters and confront them with today's perspectives on the music theater of the future.

Note: Admission free. All events of the festival focus are only accessible with a ticket for the following performance at the National Theater.

LECTURES

Before selected performances, experts from various fields will offer new perspectives on the works shown and on music theater in general. Sometimes from a historical, sometimes from a contemporary perspective, they will venture an unconventional look at the world of opera.

Playlist

As a pop-up format, Playlist, the Munich Autor:innenwerkstatt for drama and opera, presents a series of current plays written and composed by students of theater studies at the LMU and the Hochschule für Musik und Theater during the past semester. The optimization mania of our time, the confrontation with oneself and the world, love, dreams, loneliness and the fear of losing control over one's own life - the young playwrights and composers reveal what moves them both creatively and relentlessly.

TO THE MUSEUM BEFORE THE OPERA

Between 1872 and 1885, over 200 drama, opera and ballet performances were held in Munich's Residenz and National Theaters exclusively for King Ludwig II. They offer the monarch the opportunity to escape from his everyday life into more ideal worlds. In short guided tours, the curator provides insights into the current cabinet exhibition of the German Theater Museum.
