The Bayerische Staatsoper is already in preparations for the Munich Opera Festival 2022. The first Munich Opera Festival under the Artistic Direction of Serge Dorny focuses on four great compositions by Richard Strauss with its underlying theme of the passing of time.
True to tradition, the Festival Service opens the festivities at 10 am (CEST) on Sunday, 26 June 2022. The Bayerische Staatsoper celebrates the opening of the Munich Opera Festival with the premiere of Krzysztof Penderecki's The Devils of Loudun on Monday, 27 June 2022, 7 pm (CEST). General Music Director Vladimir Jurowski conducts, Simon Stone directs.
On Sunday, 17 July 2022, 7 pm (CEST), Strauss' last opera Capriccio, premiered at the Nationaltheater in 1942, premieres in a production by David Marton. Diana Damrau and Michael Nagy perform as the Count and Countess. The Bayerische Staatsorchester performs under the Musical Direction of Lothar Koenigs. The opera is part of the Richard Strauss cycle, the central theme of the 2022 Opera Festival. Barrie Kosky's productions of Der Rosenkavalier and Die schweigsame Frau as well as Krzysztof Warlikowski's production of Die Frau ohne Schatten complete the focus on compositions by Richard Strauss.
The repertory schedule brings all New Productions of the ongoing 2021-22 opera season back to the stage. Furthermore, the program includes Giacomo Puccini's La bohème, Giuseppe Verdi's Macbeth and La traviata. The opera productions in the festival program feature opera singers such as Aida Garifullina, Marlis Petersen or Anja Harteros, Plácido Domingo, Leo Nucci, Jonas Kaufmann, Piotr Beczała and Gregory Kunde.
Song recitals with Sonya Yoncheva, Anja Harteros, Ian Bostridge, Christian Gerhaher and Jonas Kaufmann as well as festival and chamber concerts complement the Opera Festival as they have done every year, making it the multifaceted festival that has attracted audiences worldwide for many decades.
The Bayerische Staatsballett opens its Festival Season with Heute ist morgen (Today is Tomorrow) on Friday, 24 June 2022, at 7.30 pm (CEST).

Krzysztof Penderecki's The Devils of Loudun premieres on Monday, 27 June 2022, 7 pm (CEST), opening this year's Munich Opera Festival. The New Production is under the Musical Direction of General Music Director Vladimir Jurowski. Simon Stone directs. In role debuts, Ausrine Stundyte performs as Jeanne and Wolfgang Koch as Grandier.
Sinful fantasies of a nun, lewd debauchery of a priest, envy and jealousy of bigoted petit bourgeois - and above all the political master plan of an ambitious churchman: from this mixture of events an exorcism excess arose in a French provincial town of the early 17th century. The feigned exorcism of the supposedly possessed Ursuline nun Jeanne became a means for Cardinal Richelieu to silence disagreeable forces such as the outspoken clergyman Grandier on the scaffold, thus creating a climate of fear in which no one would dare oppose him.
The premiere performance of Penderecki's opus on Monday, 27 June 2022, 7 pm (CEST), is broadcast live on BR-KLASSIK Concert on radio.

Richard Strauss' last opera Capriccio premieres on Sunday, 17 July 2022, 7 pm (CEST), at the Prinzregententheater. With this late work, the composer takes stock musically. He locates the action in late 18th-century Paris and has his personnel discuss questions of aesthetics, even though he composes his opera set in the war-torn Germany of 1942.
Director David Marton does not block out the horrors of the period in which the work was written, tracing their imprint into the work while still preserving its spirit. His production of Capriccio was created for the Opéra National de Lyon. At the Bayerische Staatsoper, he is recreating the production with a stage design by his longtime set designer Christian Friedländer. The Musical Director of the opera is Lothar Koenigs. Diana Damrau takes on the role of the Countess. Michael Nagy can be experienced as the Count.

The Festival Song Evenings bring programs of Baroque vocal music (Sonya Yoncheva), thematic musical expeditions of the soul (Marlis Petersen), a reunion with Anja Harteros and Jonas Kaufmann, a Winterreise with Ian Bostridge, and three evenings of song cycles by Hugo Wolf, in which Christian Gerhaher joins successively with Julia Kleiter, Anna Lucia Richter and Anna Prohaska
Festival and chamber concerts complete the program.

To kick off this year's Opera Festival, the program once again features a ballet premiere: the three-part evening Heute ist morgen 2022, which presents creations by young choreographers. In addition to Özkan Ayik and Philippe Kratz, Principal Jonah Cook is also taking part in this year's festival with his debut choreographic work Played. The four performances in total take place between 24 and 27 June 2022. On Wednesday, 29 June 2022, John Neumeier's A Midsummer Night's Dream is performed, and the Bayerische Staatsballett additionally presents the two premieres of the current season as part of the Festival: the contemporary Triple Bill Passages on Monday, 4 July 2022, and finally the ballet fairy tale Cinderella by Christopher Wheeldon on Wednesday, 13 July 2022. Between 6 and 10 July 2022, the company is on guest performance at the Festival de Peralada in Spain with two mixed programs.
