David Garforth

David Garforth studied principally at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris (Premier Prix) and followed working with Igor Markevitch for three years. Garforth was appointed Conductor and Music Consultant of Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo with the Orchestra Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo and was also a guest conductor of the Ballet de Marseille Roland Petit, Opéra de Paris, the New National Theatre Tokyo with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Tokyo Ballet. He was later appointed conductor of the Teatro alla Scala Milan where he conducted all the classical dance repertoire at La Scala and all their world tours for fifteen years. He was awarded the Danza and Danza Prize for his conducting of dance repertoire at La Scala.
There are a number of audio and video recordings with his conducting including a series of recordings for the BBC series Ballerina with the Royal Opera House Orchestra Covent Garden and the Orchestra of the Teatro Maryinsky, St Petersburg, Notre Dame de Paris with the Paris Opera Ballet and Orchestra and Romeo and Juliet with the Teatro alla Scala. For CD, symphonic music with the English Chamber Orchestra, La Sylphide with the Royal Danish Orchestra and recordings with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo include Romeo and Juliet and works by Ravel, Rimsky Korsakov, Borodin and Gershwin.
David Garforth throughout his career has been particularly interested in the work of Serge Diaghilev and Les Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo. A comprehensive reference library of the compositions, audio and video recordings will shortly be published.
