Matthew Golding

Guest Dancer

The dancer and choreographer hails from Saskatchewan, Canada and began his ballet training at the age of 14 at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School. He transferred to the Universal Ballet Academy in Washington D.C. at the age of 16. He won the Youth America Grand Prix in 2002 and a scholarship from the Prix de Lausanne, which enabled him to train at the Royal Ballet School. After graduating in 2003, he was engaged by the American Ballet Theatre. In 2009, he moved to the Dutch National Ballet, where he was promoted to first soloist in 2010. For his interpretation of a role in the dance piece Short Time Together (Sol León & Paul Lightfoot), he received the Dutch dance award “Zwaan” in the category “most impressive dance performance” in 2012. In 2012 and 2013, he was nominated for the Prix Benois de la Danse in the “best dancer” category for his portrayal of the princes in Notenkraker & Muizenkoning (Wayne Eagling & Toer van Schayk) and Cinderella (Christopher Wheeldon). From 2014 to 2017, he was a Principal Dancer with the Royal Ballet in London. He has also performed with the Mariinsky Ballet, Vienna State Ballet, Berlin State Ballet, National Ballet of Canada, Tokyo Ballet, English National Ballet, Nureyev Ballet Festival, Japan International Ballet Festival and in Hong Kong. In the 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons, Matthew Golding took on the role of Vronsky in Christian Spuck's narrative ballet Anna Karenina as a guest soloist at Bayerisches Staatsballett. Together with Lucia Lacarra, he created and produced Fordlandia (2020) and In The Still Of The Night (2021) at Theater Dortmund.
