Marko Japelj
Since 1986, Marko Japelj, a trained architect, has been working as a freelance stage designer and has designed almost three hundred performances in Slovenia and abroad. Notable examples include the opera production The Flying Dutchman at the Slovenian National Theatre in Ljubljana in 2013 (director: Matjaž Berger), the theatre production Brezmadežna based on Colm Tóibín's The Testament of Mary at the Slovenian National Theatre Maribor in 2016 (Livija Pandur based on a concept by Matjaž Pandur), the ballet production Smrt u Venecij (Death in Venice) at the Slovenian National Theatre Maribor (choreography: Valentina Turcu) and the ballet production disTANZ at the Zurich Ballet in 2017 (choreography: Filipe Portugal). He has enjoyed a long and very close collaboration with Edward Clug, creating the stage designs for productions such as Les noces (Royal Ballet of Flanders, 2013), Le Sacre du printemps (Ballet Zurich, 2016), Hora (Ballett Dortmund, 2017), Proof (Nederlands Dans Theater 1, 2017), Peer Gynt (Vienna State Ballet, 2018), Faust (Ballet Zurich, 2018), Patterns in ¾ (Stuttgart Ballet, 2019), Мастер и Маргарита (Bolshoi Theatre Moscow, 2021), Coppélia (together with Nika Zupanc, Theater Basel 2023) und A Midsummer Night's Dream (Berlin State Ballet, 2025) and Castor et Pollux (Grand Théâtre de Genève, 2026).
