NEW BALLET POSTER SERIES
MAN IS WHAT HE MAKES OF HIMSELF
When we reflect on the nature of human existence, Jean-Paul Sartre’s famous dictum, “Man is what he makes of himself,” reminds us of the profound responsibility each individual bears in shaping their own being and existence.
John Neumeier’s The Nutcracker returns to the National Theatre after a long hiatus in an interpretation that sets it apart from the traditional Christmas story. At the center is young Marie, who receives a nutcracker and a pair of pointe shoes for her birthday – gifts that open the door to a magical journey into the world of ballet and theatre.
Also by John Neumeier, The Lady of the Camellias is the company’s second revival of the season. The ballet follows a woman who asserts herself in a male-dominated society, earns respect, and, driven by love, is willing to leave everything behind. It is a work of profound emotional intensity and a deeply moving love story.
Alongside these full-length narrative ballets, the company showcases its versatility in shorter works. The season’s first premiere, Waves and Circles, pairs a new creation by Canadian choreographer Emma Portner with masterpieces by Maurice Béjart and William Forsythe.
Our Ballet Festival Week introduces the second premiere, Common Ground, with Swedish choreographers Alexander Ekman and Johan Inger presenting their work in Munich for the first time. Known for their wit, eccentricity, and choreographic brilliance, their pieces offer fresh and playful perspectives.
The season concludes at the Prinzregententheater with Constellations, an evening of shorter ballets and excerpts – from classics like Paquita to contemporary works by Angelin Preljocaj and Edward Clug – brought together to create a unique brilliance through their variety.
The posters (A1) are now available in the opera shop for €8.
