Vladimir Jurowski appointed Honorary Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire Vladimir Jurowski, General Music Director of the Bayerische Staatsoper, has been appointed Honorary Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KBE). This award is conferred by His Majesty King Charles III on the recommendation of the British Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs in recognition of his services to music and the arts.
Vladimir Jurowski, one of the most sought-after conductors of our time, celebrated worldwide for his incisive musicality and moving artistic commitment, was born in Moscow in 1972 and completed the first part of his music studies at the Moscow Conservatory of Music. He moved to Germany with his family in 1990 and continued his studies at the conservatories in Dresden and Berlin.
Jurowski has been General Music Director of the Bayerische Staatsoper since 2021 and Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin since 2017, but has had deep musical roots in the UK since his debut as a conductor at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in 1996. In 2021, he stepped down from his highly acclaimed fifteen-year tenure as Chief Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra to become its Conductor Emeritus. He was also Music Director of Glyndebourne Festival Opera (2001-2013), where he conducted a number of acclaimed productions, and is Principal Artist of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. The Knighthood of Honor was first conferred by King George V in 1917 and is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to their field in the United Kingdom but are not citizens of a Commonwealth country. The title has been awarded to many musical personalities in the past, including Bernard Haitink, Yehudi Menuhin, Daniel Barenboim, Murray Perahia, Andre Previn, Mstislav Rostropovich and Georg Solti. As a German citizen, Vladimir Jurowski will be presented with the insignia of the Order by the King's representative in Germany, Ambassador Jill Gallard CMG CVO.
