Dmitri D. Shostakovich’s Die Nase is brought to the stage of the Bayerische Staatsoper in a staging by Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov. The new General Music Director Vladimir Jurowski conducts the Bayerisches Staatsorchester. We’ve been busy with various themes for this premiere since rehearsals began. Dive into the world of the new production: Day by day, we put together new impressions of the staging for you in articles, picture galleries, podcasts and videos. Join us in the journey right up to the premiere. Enjoy!

Our Files will give you an exclusive look behind the stage with the next premieres as well.

OBSERVATIONS: DIE NASE – behind the scenes

The new OBSERVATIONS series is designed to provide insights behind the scenes of the Bayerische Staatsoper, and in the future will document the new stagings as they come together. In the first episode, we observe how a nose finds its way on to the stage. And what are the body parts all about? Director Kirill Serebrennikov speaks here about his inspiration, the background elements to the staging and the positive sides of directing from one’s home office. Vladimir Jurowski also reflects on normality in general, as well as the fate of Kovalyov and Dmitri Shostakovich’s piece, with which he makes his debut as General Music Director.

Noses in progress

The noses are everywhere. Everywhere! Over sixty noses made from different types of silicon are required per performance of the opera, Die Nase; more than four hundred and fifty Munich noses will therefore be moulded in our workshop especially for our first premiere of the season – Die Nase by Dmitri Shostakovich. So many noses deserve to be eyed! We observed a nose at the hour of its birth ...

The more noses, the better ...

The noses have now arrived at Make-up. In Kirill Serebrennikov’s staging of Die Nase, the nose reflects the person’s social status – the more noses a face has, the better.
Ensemble member Mirjam Mesak gave us a brief insight and took us along to her first make-up rehearsal last week!

Drum solo as narrative

The rehearsals for Die Nase are in top gear.
Shostakovich’s drum solo plays a really special role in Kiril Serebrennikov’s staging – it relates the story further, and so becomes the protagonist itself.
You’ll find the rehearsals video on our Instagram feed.
