PRESS RELEASE: REPLACEMENT OF GRANDIER IN "DIE TEUFEL VON LOUDUN" // FURTHER NEWS ABOUT THE MUNICH OPERA FESTIVAL
REPLACEMENT OF GRANDIER IN "DIE TEUFEL VON LOUDUN"
Wolfgang Koch, who was supposed to sing the part of the Grandier, unfortunately had to cancel the premiere due to illness. The opera Die Teufel von Loudun has been performed only a few times since its first performance, which made the search for singers who had the role in their repertoire difficult. This led to an unusual solution: Robert Dölle, from the Residenztheater ensemble, will scenically portray the role of Grandier. Jordan Shanahan will sing the part from the side of the stage.
Krzysztof Penderecki's Die Teufel von Loudun premieres Monday, 27 June 2022, 7 pm, opening this year's Munich Opera Festival. It is conducted by General Music Director Vladimir Jurowski. Simon Stone directs. Aušrinė Stundytė performs as Jeanne.
The Festival premiere on Monday, 27 June 2022, 7 pm, is broadcast live via live stream on STAATSOPER.TV, BR-KLASSIK Concert as well as on radio. Before the performance begins, host Maximilian Maier, from 6:30 pm onwards, will talk to people involved in the production.

FESTIVAL PREMIERE „DIE TEUFEL VON LOUDUN" ON 27 JUNE 2022 WITH A REPLACEMENT OF GRANDIER
Krzysztof Penderecki's Die Teufel von Loudun celebrates its premiere on Monday, 27 June 2022, 7 pm, opening this year's Münchner Operernfestspiele. The new production is under the Musical Direction of General Music Director Vladimir Jurowski. Simon Stone directs. In role debuts are Aušrinė Stundytė as Jeanne and Jordan Shanahan and Robert Dölle as Grandier.
Sinful fantasies of a nun, lewd debauchery of a priest, envy and jealousy of bigoted petty bourgeoisie - and above all the political master plan of an ambitious churchman: from this mixture of events an exorcism excess arose in a French provincial town in the early 17th century. The feigned exorcism of the allegedly possessed Ursuline nun Jeanne became a means for Cardinal Richelieu to silence disagreeable forces such as the open-hearted clergyman Grandier on the scaffold, thus creating a climate of fear in which no one will dare to oppose him.
The premiere performance of Penderecki's work on Monday, 27 June 2022, 7 pm, is broadcasted live on BR-KLASSIK Concert and on radio.
A Video-on-demand will be available for 30 days on STAATSOPER.TV and BR-KLASSIK Concert from Tuesday 28 June 2022.

Robert Dölle, born in Frankfurt am Main, completed his acting studies at the Otto Falckenberg School in Munich. In 1996 he took up his first permanent engagement at the Münchner Kammerspiele, where he appeared in productions by Dieter Dorn and Peter Zadek, among others. In 1999 he moved to Schauspiel Frankfurt, where he worked with Amélie Niermeyer, Jens-Daniel Herzog and Hans Falar, among others. In 2001 he returned to the Münchner Kammerspiele, where he worked with directors such as Jossi Wieler, Johan Simons and Karin Beier. From 2009 to 2019 he was engaged at Schauspiel Köln, where he appeared in productions by Karin Beier, Stefan Bachmann, Alvis Hermanis, Christina Paulhofer, Rafael Sanchez, Sebastian Nübling, Nicolas Steman, Therese Willstedt, Roger Vontobel. Since 2002, Dölle has also been increasingly active in film and television, most recently, for example, in the cinema production Mackie Messer - Brecht's Dreigroschenfilm by Joachim Lang.
Jordan Shanahan, born in Hawaii, studied trombone and composition at the University of Hawaii. He then transferred to Temple University Philadelphia to study voice. His repertoire includes roles such as Riccardo (I Puritani), Escamillo (Carmen), Zurga (Les Pêcheurs de perles), Figaro and Il Conte di Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro), die Titelpartie in Rigoletto, Clyde Griffiths (An American Tragedy), Don Carlo di Vargas (La Forza del Destino) and Tamare (Die Gezeichneten). More recently, he has been in demand for Wagner roles: the title role in Der fliegende Holländer, Wolfram von Eschenbach in Tannhäuser and Alberich in Der Ring des Nibelungen, which he performed in Stefan Herheim's new production at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. He has also sung at opera houses such as the Metropolitan Opera New York, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Santa Fe Opera, the Nederlands Opera in Amsterdam, the Opera of St. Louis, the Theater St. Gallen and at the Bregenz Festival. He made his debut at the Bayerische Staatsoper in 2016 as Apostolo Gazella in Lucrezia Borgia.
PREMIERE "CAPRICCIO" ON 17 JULY 2022
Richard Strauss' last opera Capriccio premieres at the Prinzregententheater on Sunday, 17 July 2022, 7 pm. The composer takes stock musically with this late work. He sets the action in late 18th-century Paris and has his personnel discuss questions of aesthetics, even though he writes his opera in war-torn Germany in 1942.
Director David Marton does not hide the horrors of the time of its creation, traces them into the work and yet preserves its spirit. His production of Capriccio was created for the Opéra National de Lyon. At the Bayerische Staatsoper, he is recreating the production with a set design by his long-time stage designer Christian Friedländer. Musical Direction Lothar Koenigs conducts the Bayerische Staatsorchester. Diana Damrau takes on the role of the Countess. Michael Nagy can be experienced as the Count.
