In the 1st Academy Concert, the young conductor Joseph Bastian makes his debut on the podium of the Bavarian State Orchestra and conducts, among other works, Claude Debussy's epochal tone poem La Mer. Also on the program is a work by the Walloon composer Guillaume Lekeu, who died of typhoid fever at the age of 24. British composer Thomas Adès' three Couperin adaptations combine Anglo- and Francophone musical traditions. The soloist in Edward Elgar's lyrical Violoncello Concerto is Maximilian Hornung - a first-time guest with the Bavarian State Orchestra.
