An Alpine Symphony op. 64
In his 3rd Academy Concert, GMD Vladimir Jurowski traces the orchestra's earliest musical beginnings (with music by Orlando di Lasso, its famous 16th-century predecessor) to the present (with a commissioned work by Brett Dean, whose opera Hamlet is also on the programme this season). As the main symphonic work, Richard Strauss' Alpine Symphony represents this orchestra's special connection with the Munich composer. This concert opens the anniversary celebrations marking the 500th anniversary of the Bayerisches Staatsorchester and will also be heard in the ceremonial act on 8 January.
