Joop Caboort

Light design

Lighting designer Joop Caboort was born in The Hague into a family of theatre people and started out as an electrician at the Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT). He was the technical director of the NDT from 1970 to 1995. Joop Caboort has also worked as a lighting designer at the NDT since 1970 and has designed the lighting for around 600 ballets, including Hans van Manen, Jirí Kylián, Nacho Duato, Jennifer Muller, Louis Falco, Glen Tetley, Maurice Béjart and Nils Christe. Joop Caboort has also worked closely with stage designers such as Jean-Paul Vroom, Keso Dekker, William Katz, Walter Nobbe, Nadine Bayliss, John F. Macfarlane and Michael Simon. He has also worked at the Royal Opera House London, the Opéra de Paris, the Vienna State Opera, the Bavarian State Ballet and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. In 1995, Joop Caboort founded his office for lighting design and theatre consulting and has been working as a freelancer ever since.
