Sol León

Born in Córdoba, Spain, Sol León joined NDT 2 in The Hague in 1987 after graduating from the National Ballet Academy in Madrid, then under the direction of Arlette van Boven. Two years later, she joined the main company, NDT 1, directed by Jiří Kylián, where she danced until 2003. That same year, she became NDT's resident choreographer, working in a duo with Paul Lightfoot. They held this position until 2020. Sol Léon also served as the company's artistic advisor from 2012 to 2020. León and Lightfoot have been choreographing together since 1989 and have created more than 60 works for NDT in this capacity. The duo received two "Zwaan" production awards from the Dutch Theatre Association (VSDC) for their productions Shutters Shut and Subject to Change in 2003 and Shoot the Moon in 2006. For their work Signing Off (2003), they received the Prix Benois de la Danse in the category of 'Choreography' in 2004. In 2021, Sol León received the Premio Nacional de Danza from the Spanish Ministry of Culture in the "Creation" category. Their piece Stars Like Moths premiered at the Staatsballett Berlin in December 2023. In July 2024, Sol received the insignia of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters from the Minister of Culture of France.
