Gustav Mahler
Das Lied von der Erde

"Das Lied von der Erde is the most personal sound in Mahler's oeuvre, perhaps in music," conductor Bruno Walter said about this composition, in which Gustav Mahler fused the intimacy of the song with the monumentality of the symphony. His own piano version focuses on the first of these two aspects: It listens even more inwardly and exposes the delicate textual interpretation with which Mahler set the repetitions of ancient Chinese poems to sound. The work, composed in 1908-09, reveals the unresolved polarity of this world and the next, becoming and passing, life and death.
