Nicolas Paul

Choreographer
Nicolas Paul trained at the École de Danse de l'Opéra de Paris and joined the corps de ballet in 1996. In 2002 he was promoted to the rank of "Sujet". His career as a choreographer began in 2001 with the creation of On peut toujours interpréter le vol des oiseaux. As a member of the artists' collective "Incidence Chorégraphique", he choreographed several dance pieces: Deux Prisonniers, deux tortionnaires; Akathisie; Gesualdo; I forget my kee in my hotel room; Bubble, Voie sans voix. In 2009, the Opéra National de Paris commissioned his first work. He then created Répliques for the Millepied/Paul/McGregor evening. The piece was revived in 2015 as part of the Paul/Rigal/Millepied/Lock evening. Invitations from other companies followed: Nobody on the road was created for the Korean National Ballet and Lamentation Variation for the Martha Graham Dance Company. Opera projects include productions such as Platée with Robert Carsen and Les Arts Florissants (Theater an der Wien, Opéra-Comique) or La nuit de Louis XIV with Denis Podalydès at the Palace of Versailles. For film productions, he choreographed the dance scenes in Divines by Houda Benyamina (Caméra d'or at the Cannes Film Festival). In 2015, he presented (Juliette), an interdisciplinary work he created with Estelle Delesalle for the Palais de Tokyo. The following year, he choreographed UC-98 RGV, a performance in collaboration with Hoël Duret for the evening La rumeur des naufrages in the public area of the Palais Garnier. This performance and his duo Pour un Abîme were invited to the Foire internationale d'art contemporain (FIAC). From 2016 to 2017, he won a residency at the Académie Chorégraphique de l'Opéra National de Paris. In the same year, he created Sept mètres et demi au-dessus des montagnes for the Paris Opera Ballet. On the occasion of the 350th anniversary of the Paris Opera, he created Degas, Danse, an immersive performance in the form of a tour of the Musée d'Orsay. In 2021, he created another interdisciplinary project entitled aimer. In the same year, he choreographed the danced passages of the Renée Fleming Gala staged by Robert Carsen at the Opéra Garnier. In 2022/23 he created Mémoire de nous deux for a pair of dancers from the Opéra de Paris to César Franck's Prélude Choral et Fugue as part of the Opéra en Guyane, as well as scenes in Handel's Ariodante directed by Robert Carsen at the Opéra Garnier.
