For the Children of Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

After procreative preparations - first with Pina Bausch herself and later with her son, Salomon Bausch and the artistic directors of the Tanztheater Wuppertal - the production will come to fruition in April 2016. The rehearsal process started back in 2014 and is held in intensive block session run under the direction of Ruth Amarante and with collaboration of Daphnis Kokkinos and Azusa Seyama, together with the first night cast of For the Children of Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.

An exhilarating rehearsal process for both sides will culminate with the first of the late works by Pina Bausch performed by a different company than Tanztheater Wuppertal. It seems redundant to say how proud we are to see this production on stage, looking back at years of negotiations and creative talks with Pina Bausch herself starting back in 2008. For the dancers of the Bavarian State Ballet, an ensemble that has adapted to many styles over the past 16 years, this will be the first time interpreting a piece of Tanztheater.

For the Children of Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow combines all elements that made up the unparalleled quality of Pina Bausch's Tanztheater. Created in 2002 in Wuppertal during the latest creative period of Bausch - a period where her work became more dance-centric - it is a compelling piece that oozes charm. It is the pinnacle of the series DANCE COUNTRY GERMANY, which showcased highlights of the choreographic work happening in Germany: from Schlemmer as representative of the Bauhaus, to Kandinsky's synaesthetic concepts at the beginning of the 20th century, to Ausdruckstanz, neoclassical finds and the full-length narrative ballet of John Cranko and John Neumeier all the way to contemporary creations from Forsythe and Siegal.

Bausch's piece is a worthy ending to the series. It is Tanztheater at its best - a genre that has influenced the dance scene in Germany over the past 40 years like none other.
