Munich Opera Festival 2027
The opera festival tradition, which continues unabated in 2027, began at the Bayerische Staatsoper in 1875. Hailing the motto, “Though the race of gods passed away like a breath“, this festival summer will focus on Richard Wagner’s Götterdämmerung. Tobias Kratzer and Vladimir Jurowski now continue their celebrated collaboration with the fourth part of the Ring des Nibelungen.
Accompanying the premiere, various formats will also complement our view of Wagner’s Ring. In cooperation with Munich’s Ludwig Maximilian University a symposium entitled, “Der beredte Seelenkündiger - Symposion zu den Figuren in Richard Wagner’s Ring des Nibelungen“, is offered from 24 to 26 June 2027. In addition, the exhibition on Wagner’s Ring in Munich (which began with the premiere of Siegfried) will be extended and continued as a space of learning and dialogue.
A special 2027 Munich Opera Festival highlight focuses on the two cyclical performance series of the entire Ring des Nibelungen. The festival programme is completed by the premiere of Benjamin Brittens opera Death in Venice in the Prinzregententheater, directed by Vasily Barkhatov and conducted by Edward Gardner. Festival chamber concerts and song recitals complement the programme and provide the opportunity to enjoy performers such as Diana Damrau or Lisette Oropesa in a more intimate setting.
