About the lecture

Capitalism is not only an economic order and a production regime, but also goes hand in hand with a specific temporal order. In this, acceleration and future orientation play a special role, but so do practices of waiting, unequal temporal autonomy and a bureaucratic containment of the future. Along the particularities of our current capitalist time order, its attractiveness but also its numerous paradoxes and fractures become clear.

Waiting to see each other again - What do we hold on to in changing times?

Science and art come together in the theme concerts co-hosted by the Max Planck Society and the Bayerische Staatsoper. The evenings are dialogues between two expressions of the human urge to explore, in the form of lectures from basic research and music for chamber ensembles and similar instrumentations. The three programmes of the 2022 / 23 season refer to the season's theme as well as to the Ja, Mai festival, now in its second year, in which contemporary music theatre meets scenic music of the past. In 2023, these are a chamber opera by the Japanese composer Toshio Hosokawa and Claudio Monteverdi's version of The Odyssey. In them, the theme of waiting and expecting is ever-present. Three scientists from the Max Planck Institutes from different disciplines approach these or other themes, and the music provides their sound commentary.

In cooperation with the Max Planck Society
