HOW FAIR THE WORLD

A prince and a princess are to marry. Both, however, do not want to give up their independence and view married life together with suspicion. On a trip to their respective destination, the two meet on a mountain plateau. Surrounded by the beauty of the Alps and after escaping an avalanche, they declare their love for one another.

With this piece, Franz Lehár demonstrated that he was the Wagner of the operetta, and Schön ist die Welt is therefore Lehár’s Tristan, but with a happy end. With this work, the composer creates a “cinematic image on the operetta stage”: It’s a sophisticated hybrid, and for precisely this reason it is predestined for a new staging in these hybrid times.
