Koma
After an accident, Michaela lies in a coma. Her family, her husband, daughter, sister, and her husband, with whom Michaela has had an affair, has gathered by her bed. Encouraged by the doctors and nursing staff, they speak with her, tell her stories of the past, while they are also busy with everyday life at the same time. In a world of shadows between life and death, but also a demi-monde of human relationships, unfulfilled dreams and desires never lived out. Are the memories revived by her family enough to wake Michaela? Koma, as specified in the score, is partially performed in complete darkness. Between scenes in brightness and in semi-darkness, together musicians, singers, actors and audience immerse themselves in a limbo. The opera forms the final part of the Schwetzinger Trilogie by Georg Friedrich Haas and Händl Klaus, and recounts the physical resistance Michaela’s body puts up. Koma is therefore a fitting addition to the Ja, Mai festival’s overarching motto, “Resistance”.
Romeo Castellucci most recently created a visually stunning Tannhäuser at the Bayerische Staatsoper. He studied stage design and painting, and in his productions he also designs the stage, costumes and light. His works are characterised by suggestive image and sound installations. His theatre is a combination of plastic sculpture, music and light with references from the visual arts. They have also been staged at the Salzburg Festival, among others, and in Brussels, Berlin, Paris, Vienna and Amsterdam. In addition to his work as a stage director, he has also worked as a film director and is the author of theoretical texts on theatre.
