Perhaps John Cranko's most famous ballet was created in 1965 and has been in the repertoire of the Bayerisches Staatsballett since 1972. The story of the young Tatyana, who falls in love with the arrogant dandy Onegin and is cruelly rejected by him, continues to fascinate audiences to this day. Onegin has been danced in Munich for over fifty years, and many of the great dancers have given the roles their own unmistakable character. Unlike almost any other narrative ballet, the various characters open up a wide range of possibilities for role creation: Tatyana, for example, develops over the course of the two-and-a-half-hour evening from a naive, dreamy teenager into a mature woman who ultimately has to make a decision between passion and duty in a dramatic confrontation. In contrast, Onegin's existence gradually disintegrates, leaving him in a desperate and lonely situation.
