On July 13, 2026, the final premiere of this season will take place: George Frideric Handel’s last major operatic success, Alcina, transports us to the island of the legendary sorceress. Director Johanna Wehner reveals the dark side of power and portrays Alcina as a deeply wounded ruler. Under the musical direction of Stefano Montanari, the Bayerische Staatsorchester embraces historically informed performance practice. Jeanine De Bique, John Holiday, and Elsa Benoit star in the leading roles.
The art song is arguably the most concentrated form through which the human voice can express itself musically. This year, as part of the Munich Opera Festival, international singers such as Jonas Kaufmann, Asmik Grigorian, Ludovic Tézier, Diana Damrau, and Christian Gerhaher will once again perform programs of their own choosing alongside renowned pianists.
Hardly any composer has had such a lasting impact on the world of Baroque music as George Frideric Handel. With arias and excerpts from Alcina, Semele, Giulio Cesare in Egitto, Tamerlano, and the oratorio Theodora, the first Baroque concert of the festival showcases the great diversity of Baroque opera.
Starting Wednesday, June 24, 2026, the Apollon Stufenbar will once again invite visitors to relax on the steps of the Nationaltheater while enjoying a drink. On days when there are no performances, the Stufennächte (Step Nights) will once again take place, featuring DJs and live music.
