20 January 2023: ON THE PHILOSOPHY OF BEGINNINGS IN BALLET
Alexei Ratmansky is one of the most famous choreographers in contemporary classical ballet. He left Moscow, immidiately when the Russian war of aggression started in Ukraine. For the Bayerisches Staatsballett, he created in the following months a world premiere on three overtures by Pyotr. I. Tchaikovsky, entitled Tchaikovsky Overtures. On the one hand, the production is characterized by classical step material, which Alexei Ratmansky knows better than any other choreographer of his generation. On the other hand, Shakespeare's tragedies Hamlet, The Tempest and Romeo and Juliet are interwoven in it, on which Tchaikovsky's fantasy overtures are based. The premiere of Ratmansky's piece takes place on 23 December 2022, so the talk will be almost exactly four weeks after the premiere. Principal Julian MacKay and Soloist Jeanette Kakareka look back on the premiere together with dramaturge Serge Honegger, report on their work with the star choreographer and explain their view of classical ballet.
