It could be so beautiful – Sandrina loves Nanni. Nencio loves Vespina. But who is the best marital candidate? Nencio would like to try his luck with Sandrina. He has the backing of Sandrina’s father, Filippo. He knows what’s best for his daughter and that way, he is also involved in the decision. Vespina takes things in hand and at the end the women prevail. The question as to whether or not infidelity pays is ultimately swept under the carpet of marriage.

Joseph Haydn wrote his opera buffa in 1773 for the rural idyll of his patron, Count Esterházy. Haydn’s musical theatre language excels with situational comedy and the musical art of characterization. Although he achieved fame as a composer of classical symphonies and chamber music, with this opera he produced a subtle chamber opera about the highs and lows of human life.
